10 Daily Essential Tools for Interior Designers

8/16/2019

The moment I started having my own design firm and has become very hands-on, I have to keep things organized and afloat as my daily task and schedules vary as the day had come despite planning ahead as emergencies, urgent matters and quick site check are inevitable. Especially when things are just nearby the locations and how it can be done.

My everyday essential tools are the things that help me be on track regardless of whatever work would land on my hand. It sounds traditional as I don't exactly rely everything on my online apps just in case things might not go as planned.

  1. Watch
  2. Mobile Phone and Charger
  3. Daily Planner
  4. Sketch pad
  5. Pens
  6. Steel Tape
  7. Laser Distance Detector
  8. Face Mask (Dust Mask)
  9. Wallet
  10. Make - up Kit

These 10 Things are my essentials it's not something I can't live without but these things are my lifesaver. How am I gonna live with it if I can't work around it?

  • Watch
My analog watch which I wore almost every day helps me keep on track from one meeting to the other and helps me avoid checking on my phone when unnecessary, saving my battery life. It keeps my meeting go on smoothly as I check the time between meetings and personal activities during and after working hours.

  • Mobile Phone and Charger
Mobile Phone and Charger, My phone is like my entire life among the 10 essential tools this is where I communicate all the people I have to communicate within the day and it's mostly business than my personal matters. From small details to the biggest detail that needed to be discussed especially working along with my fellow professionals and people in charge of the project. Often than not, I felt like a call-center agent in a day, receiving and calling for feedback. Another thing is that I use this for photo documentation allowing me to see things visually from the last visit and an update from my staff and people I'm working with.

  • Daily Planner
I have been using a daily planner since I started working like almost 10 years ago in kitchen cabinetry. I was a sales designer and because of that I have to handle multiple clients at a time and having a schedule was really a must for me to keep on track and be on schedule. Even to this day I am using a Daily Planner from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, with the perks I have along with it I really enjoyed using it and all the changes of plans, are written and the to-do list of the day, week or month.

  • Sketch Pad
My sketch pad or pad of scratch paper is another essentials when I wanted to point out some details on site. Giving them a rough sketch on how things can be executed and how I wanted it to be. In this way, we discuss this over in a corner and sketch what we had in mind to get to the point and waste no time during the construction. Sometimes the sketch pad is used for making drawings and dimensions on site.

  • Pens
I have a set of pens from colored pens and Pentel pens, both have different uses of each time. The pens and colored pens are used for drawings on papers while the Pentel pens are used to sketch on the walls on-site as sometimes even I have drawn things on paper, I needed them to understand a little bit more with words expressed when drawn, making our conversation and work lighter and avoiding surprises on site the next visit.

  • Steel Tape
I used to sweat a lot in getting dimensions by using the steep tape but now, I'm using it to get exact measurements that the laser can't do for me and discussion during meetings and sourcing helped me get to what I really wanted out of a particular store or meeting.

  • Laser Distance Detector
Gone are those days I have to sweat a lot in getting dimensions for a longer period of hours on those areas that are wide, tall and narrow. It helps me stressed out in getting into a sweat as I talk with my clients during on-site and for taking it longer than possible. This really worked well for me while like I have said that the steep tape is now used to get measurements that need smaller dimensions that the laser cant.

  • Face Mask or Dust Mask
It's not the face mask that we put on our face during self-care Sundays' or pampering day. It's a mask to protect our selves from the construction environment of the heavy dust during the construction period. Health will always be a priority for me and for everyone involved.

  • Wallet
My wallet has all the membership cards for work and personal needs, and other things that needed my identification, a place where I kept most of my important things. My membership helps me track my whereabouts and purchases just in case I'm trying to trace every single place I went to as much as I can. Though this is a necessity for me, I consider this a tool to work around get things smoothly as possible.

  • Make-up kit
My make-up kit in a small pouch has my essentials in case I have to make a retouch or quick meeting. I don't want to look haggard or sweaty on the next place I went to even if it's a construction site. Feeling fresh all the time does a lot of good things. I don't think anyone would like to see an interior designer who's in a hot mess, right?

Well, those are my 10 Essential Tools on my daily grind. It's very practical and keeping things afloat. My work is done in my (home) office and presentations are another discussion on where, how and what to bring as for me, it is a case to case basis. Though Laptop is a very essential tool on how i do my work, I don't bring it all the time with me and I make sure I can make those things done in my (home) office and brought it with me whenever I'm on a business trip or vacation.

Every single day has I encounter new things, people and everything in between and I enjoy doing this job and I think there is a not to learn and improve as each day passes. For you, did I miss anything that can make my life easier? Are there any tools should I consider using?

5 Appliances for your Air BnB Unit

8/09/2019

In any interior design projects I have encountered, my clients would often discuss with me the appliances they wanted and what things I would recommend inside their unit and time and time I have memorized the things I would often choose for a rental unit as and allowing them to deicde which ones they would go for.  Below are the basic appliances I often use for a rental property and it makes a lot of sense how these things make wonder for both me and my client.

  1. LG 43 Inches 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV This 43" Smart LED TV has a built-in Alexa. Its smart functions makes it easier to control whenever you feel a little lazy when checking things manually as your guest is about and has left the premises. Its Smart features do no longer require you to have a cable line instead apply for an online streaming app.
  2. Noxton Built-In Cooktop 2Burner Electric Hob. A Built-in Cooktop is the best way to utilize a small space, especially for short term vacation rentals wherein everything is easy to use and safe for every user.
  3. 3. Bruan Nu-Tone Stainless Steel Rangehood. This product helps t filter unwanted air inside your vacation rental, it eliminates odors that may cause disturbance to your neighbor and also the smoke circulating in the unit which we avoid to alert the smoke detector when cooking and a shower from the sprinklers.
    4. 2 Door Danby Refridgerator.  This small size refrigerator can accommodate the guests' needs especially when they have brought foods with them or guest who enjoys preparing food for themselves this way their lifestyle isn't as far as it seems to leave their home. No need for water dispensers for cold drinks which they can surely accommodate their need.
    5. Toshiba Microwave. Quick Meals and reheating food can be as easy as using a microwave. It's hassle-free and easy to use. If you're the type doesn't enjoy cooking this quick and easy oven will be the favorite among the guest.
In every country there would be a preferred product by the client or even a personal choice, however despite there is a lot of brands around the appliance section which we can purchase online or even on a physical visit to a store there is no doubt that the listed items above are the basic things you need for your personal use and even for vacation rental properties.

The project that got approved with a Moodboard for Mr. W

8/02/2019

Mr. W agreed to have a clean, fine-looking condominium apartment, where there is similarity in his house in Australia. Since the design phase was longer than usual due to some reasons, we both agreed to a Modern interior design concept where all requirements and factors in his decision making was considered.

As a person who loves white paint and textures for interiors, it was a bigger challenge for me agree of an all white concept to have 85% of the entire space in white as I felt it would be overly done because its just too white. However, as the design progresses we end up having three colors. Yes, Three colors which I love the most red, white and black which I'm convinced to have this concept for there would be colors in it.

Interior Design Project for Mr. W

The project was already completed for over a month now, and I took sometime to clean up the presentation that has the key elements why we came up that way despite the actual didn't come up the same as it should be, there were things added and taken out as we progressed during the construction phase.

The colors were indeed we worked with when the design finished, colors and materials were selected and these were all came from the inspiration boards that we discussed during our meetings. A white and clean kitchen and boards all over the space with lots of multi-functional storage organizers of every space requirement. The space was very tight and they do have a lot of stuff to store properly.

The design was to utilized every corner into a storage space which we achieved by having a custom built cabinetry for their tall pantry to the working space, a kitchen pantry work space with a waterfalls design of solid surface granite similar to the main kitchen which was also extended covering the wardrobe closet area.

The media area also serves as a dining area and a working space in white. These people has to move and the baby crawls and walks around which they needed to have enough space to enjoy their simple joy. They have an entire glass window and a door which led going to the balcony wherein the family can rest and relax as the beautiful sunset its doors to the moonlight. open whose view during the morning is the ocean view and its harbor.

Designing spaces, Changing lives for World Interiors Day

Last May 18, 2019, In celebration for the World Interiors Day,  Philippine Institute of Interior Designers - Cebu Chapter's General Members Meeting was graced by IDR. Charisse Gail Punzalan, discussing this years' theme "Designing spaces, Changing lives".

Unlike any other speakers, we have encountered, IDR. Charisse became my instant favorite speaker. She shared her insights and experiences to all the members present during the talk and it was amazing that she shared such experience to us when most are even reluctant to share and which I admire about her. She shared was base on her personal experience that everyone can relate to and how she does her own process despite having been said she holds one of the highest position of Trends and Concept.

Idr. Punzalan Photo by IDr. Punzalan

She shared that as a designer she focused on Workspace Interior Design which is one of the reasons why I attended in the first place, that night I asked around 5 questions that gave me a full insight on how things can improve on my processes and how should I create a path that I might go too. However, it gave me an insight that answers my questions in my possible topic for my Masters which is related to Co-working spaces in an Office Landscape.

Before the night ends, everyone was happy to be there it was insightful and personal career talk we had that everyone in the room has talked how wonderful the talk has been and this kind of talk that Idr. Punzalan has shown to us should be repeated in every General Meeting Assembly.

Before and After: The Black and White Modern Abode

7/19/2019
Premiere Design Interiors

In my previous blog, I have shared that we worked for around 5 months for the design, technically the approved design was done for less than a month but due to some personal concerns and all the factors that the client has we had to prolong it due to the previous experience he had with another person before me, my predecessor, which explains why it took us longer to block the schedule on both sides.

90% from the existing unit was demolished and implement the design I have created for this unit, rather than having this retained which I would definitely not agree with as it will give me more headache than it should be and good thing that the client has the same thought as well and for not wanting any trace of the previous design to be retained which is fair on my part. During the construction, we have to work around 60 working days to have this implemented that includes some setbacks. Gladly our team was able to get the result the client wanted.

100% in this unit was custom built and made to order, everything was stripped off and we created a new look but similar set-up since its a studio unit which is about 30sqm. The floor plank laminate is from Pergo and at that time we have to wait for around 3-5 weeks for it to arrive from Belgium as they ran out of stocks in Cebu and Manila and no regrets for it was definitely worth the wait.

The Kitchen and Wardrobe were the first and second batch to be assembled on-site, and all are made of High Gloss Material Board, ad preferred by the client to have a shiny look of the cabinetries as for me, I prefer to have this in white to make the area wider and the lights to reflect from its boards and at night it will be brighter. We had an extended kitchen, aligning it to the wardrobe area, making it more seamless and looking better and the waterfalls synthetic granite in black makes a statement.

The Kitchen Pantry is fully utilized by using kitchen organizers from Hafele behind those High Gloss white is consistent in this area as well as going towards the dining table/media area. Since the working area is aligned to the main kitchen both have black synthetic granite in waterfalls.

To utilize further space and the fact that we need a dining area for the family of three, a writing desk and minimal storage for its knick-knacks. We are left to have a floating table made of synthetic granite in white to have a unified look uniting four materials as seen in this area, the high-gloss board, the concrete white gloss paint finish, and the white synthetic table and white baseboard.  Did I say, we made sure to hide all cables that can still be functional? All those wires are now behind the TV.

I'm glad that despite the client was happy with our results and also able to be on time and meet his requirements, We did this for 60 days, everyone did their best to be on time and working hand-in-hand together. I look forward that this serves as an inspiration for unit owners to hire a licensed interior designer.

Transform your Condominium Unit in 60 days

7/12/2019

After 7 months for online communication, we have actually locked-in on what the client wants base on the overall factors he had considered and everything in between and this project to implement the design was done for a very limited time of 2 months to construct. The color scheme of this project was supposed to be red, white and black and on the last minute upon seeing this look we have to take out the red accent materials using a graphic kote from Kima Glass.  Hence, the project turned out well wherein the crucial time was on the project management to meet the deadline and possible extensions.

The concept of this project was Modern, with all the clean lines and neutral color to be used it's definitely modern. This studio unit is a 30 sqm area with limited space to cover all the requirements the client wanted. A huge kitchen with lots of storage and multi-functional space that should all go together with their requirements such as the dining area, writing desk, a media wall and wardrobe, and storage, to put this all together was a bit easier when things base on cost were considered after designing.

The look upon entering this almost all-white studio unit. We added laminated floors from Design Source Inc. placed on top of the floor, which material was from Brazil. The extended main kitchen and the stretched out kitchen pantry seen on the other side was definitely their top priority. The kitchen appliances and kitchen storage came from Hafele which we both enjoyed when sourcing things to make their space functional and modern.

This is the kitchen pantry aligned to the main kitchen using synthetic solid surface, which is my recommended material. The media area also served as a dining area and a writing desk as it also uses a synthetic countertop to match its high-gloss melamine boards and pure white paints from Boysen.

The mirror was already here when we started designing as this was done by this previous contractor, we just retained and work around what we can do. As you have noticed, this has a yellowish color because we used tri-color lights and 2 cove lights both in warm white and daylight, giving him options on what they like best. The styling wasn't done as requested by the client since their items will be brought the following day. Speaking of a crucial turn-over.

Here is the look infront of the mirror with me, taking photos before I leave. On the right side is the sliding wardrobe, located behind the kitchen. This is connected to each other including on its beams.  Speaking of Smart Home, we only applied what was practical, no alexa just remote and switches that eases everything and a mechanism that organizes your stuff.

The family of 3 arrived the following day bringing all their belongs from their apartment and in no time as per my visit late in the afternoon,  every door cabinet was filled with their things and a little left for new ones. We were able to pull that of in 60 days, the floors, the cabinetry works and general construction works. It was so little time with a big scope of works. It was a bit stressfull as,  time becomes your competition to keep on track of the schedule despite having set-backs it was all worth it seeing your design becoming a reality.

Oh! Btw, I had fun taking photos on this project since it would be my first time to use my Fujifilm Camera for my projects. Speaking of my childhood hobby.

Dark Wing Pizza

6/28/2019

Dark Chicken Wings_01

During one of my food searching around Parkmall for an early lunch, I came across Dark Wing Pizza, I was even hesitating to enter this food place but I got stuck with its industrial features and maybe their food would do the same.

Dark Chicken Wings_02

I had ordered a meal that is enough for my famished appetite from two meetings before I proceed to the other, it was a quick meal and made me stayed longer than usual. The food itself was worth the price I paid for which was less than 200 pesos. Very affordable for those who wanted to have a complete meal and making them full. This meal set for me is comparable to a super meal from Jollibee.

Dark Chicken Wings_03

The Pizza was in good texture and the crust is just right for a dessert. I enjoyed that it has a lot of toppings and the spaghetti was at its best for people wanting a just right amount of sauce for a spaghetti and  the sauce tastes more of a Filipino sauce, it is sweet and In my personal preference,  I wish they added more sauce and cheese upon serving, I enjoy pasta with overloaded sauce and cheese. The chicken is well done and the crisp was really good, despite I don't eat chicken skin but did taste it. It isn't too oily but will make you crave for more.

Dark Chicken Wings_04

This is the interiors of the Dark Chicken Wings Pizza, its very masculine and mostly neutral colors were used. It has industrial features from a container fan and its furniture was made of metal mixed with wood finish tables.

Dark Chicken Wings_05
This area can fit around 10 - 12 persons and this is good for families or group of friends dining together. They will be able to fit well enough.

Dark Chicken Wings_06

I stayed in this corner since I was eating alone at that time and from this area I can see a lot of people both inside and outside. Which I enjoyed.

If you wanted to try out new food or simply wanted to come back, then try Dark Chicken Wings. It is located nearby the parking lot area and jeepney terminal of Parkmall.

5 Things to do to stay organized

6/07/2019
Living in this decade has opened a lot of doors for many individuals most especially those who thrive for a better tomorrow in terms of growing their finances, more than doing a traditional business or a traditional work, digital work has opened a lot for many and there is no reason for them not to succeed. However, despite a lot of opportunities coming and just a shy away of tapping it. There are certain things that we lose control of not being in control. One thing is to stay organized, aside from having the drive to aim for a particular goal, one must have a plan by being organized or stay organized.

Since I was 18 years old I have started working part-time, both in an organization and also by helping and having the initiative to sell stuff from one person to the other. Social media was still booming at that time and I didn't make use of it and since I was also working for an organization (company) I have learned a lot of ropes and one of those things is to be organized in all ways.

There are many ways to do to stay organized and there are 5 of which that I enjoy doing the most and somehow it became part of my everyday life.

  • Get a Planner.
Having a planner will help you ease your to-do list. For this year I got myself 2019 Giving Journal from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf since I such a fan of their Tea Lattes. From the long term task of one year up to my daily to-do list has helped me stay on track most especially in running my design studio. From my personal activities to business activities this has helped me the way throughout the day.

  • Make use of the Apps
Please don't tell me you don't know this? That would be such a being lie if you've never used an App unless you're in Gen X and doesn't seem to like the digital age though I lot of whom I know is transitioning to familiarize themselves in this Social Media World. The apps helped me in organizing my business to connect with the world and to the people and by having my marketing activities make it easier and faster such and one of these is doing the design works in Canva while I have my Gmail and Calendars to sync with my daily task.

  • Delegate or Outsource Work
I enjoy doing everything from the smallest detail to the bigger picture in building my design studio and most of my earlier work while I was beginning to do freelancing work I did most of it, to help me save in my finances and also I have a lot of free time to do other extracurricular at night but as soon as my business has begun picking up and I went full-time things are slowly changing and I am still adapting to it up one at a time. It's hard because I'm used that I do everything and it has become a source of my stress and has become overwhelming to me and the only way to survive and welcome the change is to outsource work that can be outsourced work just to stay organized. Every project has deadlines and we need help to hit that deadline.

  • Have a routine
Remember the times when we are younger, we have to wake up at 5 o'clock in the morning and be in school at 7 o'clock and we just hated the way it is. Now, I appreciated it though I have a different daily routine it helps me to stay organized and to keep track on in every progress make. Have you checked my previous blog post about "A Day in the life of an Interior Designer"?

  • Be with your industry friends
Being in the entrepreneurial road is fun and often times we find ourselves lost, depressed or just a lot of feels and I'm no exception for that. I have a lot of friends and I enjoy to be with them but your industry friends will help you out in your state of being because they understand what's going on with you and they are your core group of supporters both for personal and work especially when all of you are on the same page. My support group is Z Group, composed of Interior Designers and we run our own interior design studio while having another business. These type of friends also help you organize on the bigger picture and you need them also because you are not alone and feels help you keep your feet on the ground. Wine Session is savage with this group!

These are the 5 things that make me effective in dealing with my projects and help me being sane at most time. The day can be crazy but making it through is the best result we could get. What's your story then, to keep you organized?

5 places to enjoy your weekend getaway

5 places to enjoy your weekend getaway

I have been planning to take a short trip over the weekend but my grad studies and work has taken the best of those time for me at the moment and it did not stop me from pushing my luck to plan a short trip that I once had experience. Planning a trip can be daunting and scary at the same time but weekend trips are most likely to prevail when the situation calls for it. I usually choose around 5 places for a weekend getaway before I book.

5 places to enjoy your weekend getaway

I'm a bit of a planner for the past few years. That's why it is important for me to have a handy selection on where to go and what to do even in short notice. Leaving the city at dawn to catch and experience your first activity.

1. Oslob Whale Watching

This will be around a 2-4 hour trip from the city to Oslob. The first couple of times I had visited there was very exciting and it didn't bother me to be sitting on the car for such a long time despite the traffic flow is suave. Be there before 6:00am and surely you will be one of those people to enjoy the breeze, sea, and whale watching before the sunrises or you'll have a sunburn which this whale watching activity lasts only for 15minutes. Sorry, but you need to fall in line once again to get the next boat ride if you can't get enough watching the beautiful sea creature.

2. Dakong Bato, Dalaguete

Going home would be your last option for the day after you traveled for a couple of hours in Oslob and having a place to stay is one of the foremost important and just somewhere you can just sleep but a place where you (and whoever is with you) can enjoy your "me" and "we" time. This hotel is surely a place of art and "Little Cuba" because of its beautiful mural. Good private rooms and villas are available, 3 swimming pools, cafe's and restaurant to choose from and even swimming at the beach is possible plus if you enjoy taking selfies and lifestyle photos this place is for you.

3.  Simala Church

On your way home, If you had the plan to drop by a church, One of the attractions that southern part of Cebu overs is their religious attractions in going to Simala Church. This gothic inspired castle in the medieval times is worthy of a visit for those who are curious and most importantly to have some spiritual time which is open for everyone. If you are a type of person who has to go to church a 3:00pm mass and 6:00pm mass should fit in your schedule.

4. Naga Boardwalk

Before you can reach this place, I'm sure you'll pass in Carcar and they are famous for their fresh chicharron which I could not resist its taste even if I'm not a fan of oily food and that you can bring to Naga Boardwalk while strolling this beautiful place while too many things you can do from eating siomai to playing ball games or simply enjoy the beautiful scenery in the afternoon or at night as cargo ship or ships docked. We used to walk around this area before it has slowly developed and it's something I enjoy visiting since it is near my place.

5. Have a good massage

The cozy spa is located in Plaza Margarita in Lipata, Minglanilla. A friend of mine brought me here as this was her tita's spa and they have a good service and indeed I became one of their patrons as they always had the best service around the area. After a fun-filled activity over the weekend, I look forward to having a well-rested sleep and having a good massage is fulfilling. I suggest you go for a massage place that is nearby your place so it becomes more relaxing.

Now that the 5 places and activities were in place, do you have anything you'd like to share on your next weekend getaway?

20 Shades of Red

5/08/2019

20 Shades of Red

[Updated-February 20, 2017] One of the projects that I'm currently working on for a One bedroom condominium unit which color scheme is close to my heart. Red, White, and Black, wherein a particular shade of red, which is PRD-058 from Kima Glass is used as an accent. In my previous post, I mentioned that I this has become my power and back in the day during my toddler years I only knew around three colors that is red, red-orange and dark red and now that there is quite a number for a shade of red. Sounds just right knowing 3 at first because we were once taught about the crayon colors in reference to the Crayola Colors.

20 Shades of Red

As I went to continued to study in the design school,  I got introduced to different colors and shades of red which I would make reference to the lipsticks, lip tint, and color lip balms and such that I have used and is using up to this day and below are the 20 different shades f red that may just appeal to you in your homes.

How to use 20 Shades of Red

These 20 shades of red is a hue of its own and for my projects, I rarely use this color because it is quite bold and some do not apply to the theme or concept I used with my clients' preference. However, despite using sparingly on these color one must keep in mind that red is a bold color choice and the use of your space will matter on how much you are willing to use of this color.

One good example in using this color in an interior is the Dining Area because it gives you the boost you needed and since this is a warm color it increases high blood pressure and energy to the one eating making them wanting to crave more for food and in my opinion "Blush", "Mahogany" and "Merlot" seems not to apply because I find this color a bit dull for blush and too dark for mahogany and merlot.

Upon knowing these 20 Shades of Red, Which among these colors fits you well?

10 Things I learned from College (Part 1)

5/03/2019
10 things I learned from College Part 1 of 3

Last year from August to October 2018, I did a Series Talk about Becoming an Interior Designer. It is a 9 part Blog series I did to share my experiences from finding out what I wanted for college until the day I graduated. This series reflects my journey with ups and downs and for real. This time I'm going to summarize the things I have shared and give you what exactly I have learned and how it may apply to you.

The Dream of Becoming an Interior Designer. In my first blog, The dream of becoming an Interior Designer, What I learned from this and still applies to this day is that we need someone to tell us straight to our face the things that we thought about which is right for us may not fit us in the long term. Having a second opinion by a trusted member of the family and some friends can bring you a second or third thought on making big decisions. In this case, I thought Marketing was right for me and I end up taking a course in Interior Design which brought me to the right path, my love for marketing helped me market my business and me without sitting to 9-5 jobs and be employed by someone longer than I would be. I had the opportunity to be an entrepreneur in my own right and have the freedom to manage my time and my being on a construction site and going to places for my "office" and projects made it right because I can't sit more than 8 hours doing the same thing.

We need someone to access us and would make us think deeply whether the choice can be beneficial and bring us joy in the long run.

I want to be an Interior Designer. I have countless of people wanting to become an Interior Designer because they see only the result thinking that we do not think on how this process goes and thus also beautifying is our main goal, but no! it's never been the case. Find out what would work for you and do research about the industry. I took a number of college exams pointing me in the creative field and I have a lot of passions and things I enjoy that includes your environment growing up which was also one factor that how I access myself and how it helped me in so many ways that lead me to my Strengths and Weaknesses, not really minding the Opportunities and Strenght at that time.

Knowing your strenghts and weaknesses will help you gain clarity in what you wanted to do for the rest of your life and if not then it must be somehow related when you reach the point of finding more passion in the related field.

Flanking your design major. I was in my sophomore year in college when I flunked my first course, specifically my design major, I was 18 years old back then and looking back I might be full of myself at that time wanting to explore and explore and the bad news happened, I flanked the most important subject, the subject that has a number of pre-requisites and the subject that is only available once a year, not every semester. My schoolmates who experienced flanking told us that it's normal to fail in a design subject especially we are in the creative field and yes, it has become a norm as I see most of my friends and schoolmates had the same experience I did. At first, there was self-pity but at the end of the day, it's like survival of the fittest. This is the time you realize is this subject for me or should I shift to another course.

Failing means a set back that you have to overcome, its a learning experience what life has in store for you. Learning to overcome this and finding your calling is knowing that you'll survive and become better on the next opportunity.

10 ways to decorate a small space

5/01/2019

Decorating small spaces can be a stressful thing to do for most people who are busy in their careers and have different priorities in life. However, you live a place that you find no hope for improvement or for feeling every day like a crap. Whether you are living in a rental condominium or simply in your own place there are 10 ways you can improve the look of your place to feel better and comfortable.

Add a Carpet or Rug

I'm a bit particular in the flooring material but having this done from one milestone to another won't be good for my wallet especially when you are living in a rented space or an old house that you have been living for most of your life and can't do anything with it. Make use of a carpet or rug, an inexpensive material that you can add and change from time to time from one theme to the other. I use the rug for bedrooms so when my feet touch the floor I feel warm and it is ticklish for me.

Clear your walkway

Having a clear walkway from where I am staying, I make sure that I don't have any obstructions that would affect my daily habits and gradual task. I keep an open space as such as possible and maximize the dead space and storage space to maximize the use of my place.

Have a lot of Storage

Make use of functional storage pieces as this will help you store items easier and having a storage piece must also accommodate your micro storage such as the use of a Plastic Box or Organizational Box to keep particular items at a certain place and label it accordingly.  I use mega boxes that are labeled according to my preferences such as Office Supply, Travel Box, and Beauty Stuff are just a few it helps me locate the things when I need to locate it and it also helps me identify which box I am looking for. These boxes are all similar in sizes and placed in one functional multi-layered storage.

Stackable Items

Living in an apartment has helped me identify items which suit bests especially when we purchase new furniture for a certain reason. One example is my dining table, its a 4 seater with wood chairs and since almost every month we have a guest, we purchased a number of stackable tables and chairs that can be used whenever we have guests or celebrate a milestone. This stackable table and chairs can be brought outside without sacrificing our space and the look of our decorations.

Mirrors

Having mirrors can make the space bigger and wider, I make use of a tall mirror and width proportion to its measurement. This makes my space bigger and wider. The mirror reflects the things right in front of it and the lights make it twice the wattage.

Lights

Make use of different lighting use, it will make your place look better because of the different light texture. To save you from spending a lot, use a Tri-color light LED, a tricolor light has three variants of light color such as Day Light, Cool White and Warm White you just have to select which light works best for you on a specific time.

Floating items

To add a personalized touch or designated nook for your collection or special items, make use of a floating shelf to make them. This keeps your area looking bigger and fresh.

Add plants

Succulents are very popular and easy to maintain. Aside grom succulents there are different plants to choose from to bring it inside your place. It helps to purify the air and also improves your mood.

White Color Scheme

It doesn't have to be pure white but rather around the shades of white. I often recommend white for most of my projects. However, I give my clients an option to choose a variety of colors of the lightest shade of their preferred color which is considered as part of the shades of white. If they choose brown, then I give to let them choose a shade that is closest to white to make the space wider and bigger.

Add Bold Color

To make space stand out I would let my client choose a contrasting color that they find attractive or I think is attractive this gives their space a boost on not to look "dull" or "boring" as people would refer. Adding a touch of color will not only add color to your place but it will help you enhance the space and feel more connected to it.

A Typical day of a Full Time Interior Designer

A Typical day of a full time interior designer

This year I added another hat being an entrepreneur, as a Full-time Interior Designer working as a soloprenueur. I find myself having a routine to keep myself ahead of time despite the efforts of making a routine it keeps evolving and changing, As new projects come and the old one has been turned over the design requirements has to change from time to time with all the errands coming and unseen events, I make sure that I have a routine that I could do despite balancing my work and life are way different from the way I have planned. Do you experience the same thing that I have?

A Typical day of a full time interior designer

08:00 - 08:45am This is the time I have been on and off trying to wake up and successfully I did manage on this time since my meetings are around 10:00 am every Tuesdays and Thursday. I do my morning routine from waking up to getting ready to leave home. My morning starts stretching my body, brush my teeth and go to my home office to double check and prepare my things before I leave at the same time drinking my hot cup of water before I go to shower. Once I'm done with my personal hygiene stuff I hit off the dining table and have my breakfast together with my mom and discuss our plans for the day and something in between.

09:00 - 10:00am Transportation Period, I'll be going to my first meeting and since I'll be on the road I check my phone this time and read my e-mails and talk to the people whom I have, most of the time I call William, my trusted general contractor asking him on the updates of our projects and those people who will be involved including clients and if there is still a few more minutes to snooze, I grab.

10:00 - 11:45am Either I meet with a client or site visit, I make sure that I have attended their needs to address whatever situation has arisen from the project this makes me feel better to solve it right ahead during my presence on site. It really stresses me out if I can't find a good solution to what is handed. Time is Gold (and Money), No one wants to pay for an extra cost and blame games in the future right?

11:45am-01:00pm Heading to my next appointment as grab a quick lunch in one of the restaurants or fast food chains just to make sure I get my next meeting on time and stomach is full.

Material Selection for a design project

01:00 - 06:00pm In between meetings with both suppliers and clients who are around the same location this saves me time to meet them at a certain time that fits us both well, sourcing and meetings are sure to happen this time .I'm taking a break at a nearby cafe and returning all the calls this time since I don't answer calls during a meeting so I don't get lost on the topic of discussion from one client to the other. This is my productive time in the afternoon.

6:00pm onwards. Chances are I travel back home and since I'm catching up with my night exercise at the oval near my place. I take my time to sleep and since I have eaten a late snack, I don't eat dinner at all. I exercise to keep my self healthy and fit, I have been sickly due to stress and coping up with stress to end my night with an exercise which helps me go to sleep and be ready for the next day.

Most of the time I'll be at my home office to do work stuff and replying to overseas client. This is also the things I check and work on the drawings since everyone in the house is in each room so less noise. I feel at peace whenever I am able to complete my task for the day and so I would know what is ahead of me and having a dedicated space helps me relax knowing that I have to keep going on what I am doing regardless of any situation may have come. What is your day as a soloprenuer?

(Updated) What's in a Blog Name?

4/17/2019

I first posted about "What's in a blog name?" For more than two (2) years, I launched my first blog entry and back then the name of this blog was The Lounge Avenue, welcoming everyone who would be reading my blog and yes it still has the "promise" of delivering interior design, food, travel and personal thing that comes along.

The Logo of  The Lounge Avenue

The beginning of my journey was with the help of my college friends despite supporting me with my endeavors, at the back of my mind I think they thought I am crazy and they are right. Still, friendship prevails they did support me. My first few posts about How To's in the month of August was simply because they supported me. Joan, was my cheerleader and had so much support that we were able to do all those stuff and I must say she had talent in styling that I wanted but not as much as she wants it. Kristel, is the support of my ideas becoming reality for allowing, sponsoring the venue and its products used in my first month. I didn't bother afterward. Nicollette, my silent supporter, she knew our plans and despite all these stuff coming from our (Me and Joan) ideas, she even came from one of those items that we had our shoot and Lastly, to Annalie who was no longer with us at that time yet despite the different timezone, we shared a laugh on this one and knew that I will be doing what comes to my mind.

A month before The Lounge Avenue will become a year older, I changed the name to Design District and want to cover more stuff, topics and all. I had my facebook page then and still running and despite all these, I don't have much of a backup plan then. All in my head was to explore and share what's going on with me and I had another broken promise that I wasn't able to live by. As 2018 had become a fruitful year that I am grateful for and I no longer had the time to pursue blogging and even I had a change of name, the idea of having an interior design and lifestyle blog is still there and was never lost.

At this point, I wanted to delete my past posts most especially for the things that I no longer feel that is valuable and at the same time to be anyone's concern or be of interest. However, As I have re-read some of it I realize that I wanted to keep. Still, I am considering deleting it. I wanted to keep it knowing that I learned from this post from writing, expressing my thoughts and even the contents that I will be sharing in the future. I have outgrown this phase and moving forward in life is way better.

I once again renamed the blog for the third time, Emari, my first name and so does the website, I took ownership of my name. This time I took some measures on making it look more ME, a reflection of being a part of me and letting these people coming into my life for both ups and downs. Emari, the blog site is showcasing my life as an interior designer and behind of being an interior designer. No more "promises" just action.

20 Shades of Blue

4/12/2019

[First published on March 13, 2017] Blue is one of the primary colors in the color wheel. It is the most famous color in the color wheel. It is unique and versatile that even the god's make the sky and water, color blue. Blue, in general, is calming and relaxing, it even represents loyalty and trust and most of all it represents confidence, intelligence, and creativity among others that make it the preferred color by most companies who envokes a particular criterion towards their target markets and most of the kids who love SUPERMAN, the man of steel is the best way to represent a persons' character of authority, loyalty, sincerity and calmness that the people trust, confidence, and dependability.

However, Blue may have represented it in a general way, in which blue have different shades (adding black to make it dark), tone (neutral color of a particular color) and tint (adding white to the color to make it lighter), and each representing different meanings for it.

In the business sector, blue is widely used by big companies in relation to the color psychology that is applicable to all aspect in life and goes the same for interior design.

International Companies uses blue for their brand:

When applying color in Interior Design, brands would be particular on their color is applied to Interior Architectural Details, one should not miss this. I, would often find myself selecting colors that would match their brand in order to evoke the same look that they wanted to evoke and instill to the minds of their target market.

One must be careful in the area where to chose blue as you deal with this color, one must understand that color is not applicable as much as you may want to use it. Having to use blue can create a relaxing atmosphere and at the same time depressing when overly used. In using it to a personal space, the user should be involved and considered in the design process to get a cohesive look and success of getting their ideal look.
