How did I come up with my services?

Monday, November 19, 2018

After a long holiday season for the month of November, I took sometime off after being overwhelmed with the projects I am undertaking. This time I made an assessment of our finances for our next years plan which includes the services I have offered and done in the past and what worked with me and what did not.

For next year, I have decided to limit my services by streamlining what I can actually offer as not to make myself thin nor the representation of the company I am handling as the company, Premiere Design Interiors evolves and grow I have to make a better decision on what would be the best practices that is applicable on my current situation as we move forward to serve our clients and future clients.

My current services are the ones worked for me in the past while I was doing freelancing job while I was having a day job and some where applied when I went to full time freelancing. However, the combined services did not worked well as the external factors have to be carried out. Now, that the company is registered and as I approach the 3rd year in Interior Design Practice a lot of realization has been made and a lot of feels. To get on to the point of the services that by 2019, Premiere Design Interiors will have 4 main stream services to our clients.

  • E-design, a electronic interior design thru virtual communications will have to be carried for those clients who wanted an inspiration in their future projects and enjoys doing the Do-it-yourself activity and needs the guidance of a licensed interior designer.

  • Full Interior Design and Execution, an end-to-end interior design approach where design and build is combined in a more personal approach, this works best for clients who wants to be  hands on to the project and has the freedom and flexibility to choose the contractors to be involved in the project.

  • Turn Key Solutions, is an interior design and build with an end-to-end approach similar to the FIDE services. The difference is that the interior designer calls the shots for all the approving aspect and selects the contractors and people involved in the project. Client has a limited control as the approving officer is the Interior Designer and enjoys the benefit of a hassle free transaction.

  • Interior Design Branding, is focused on the visual merchandising of the commercial space and thus ensuring that the brand given to the interior designer will be aligned to the given space without compromising the functionality and aesthetics as it maximizes the productivity of the people involved making more attractive to clients.

These four services  are the ones that I have carried from the beginning that worked for me and has given me wonderful results. Each client has its own preference of a personalized services given to them and also by completing it on their preferred time. The services you you have just read will is already in my website under the project page.

Three ways to handle your money

Friday, November 16, 2018
In my previous post I gave the  5 main reasons why I need a financial goal and before we talk further about financial literacy in which I am not an expert of but I can say I have a high level of knowledge in a certain aspect. As a creative person, I have mentioned that its hard for me to save and because there was lack on interest to apply the things I learned in various means of information fed to my brain and the fact that I "hate" numbers to deal with.

Life ain't like that, Its complicated and tricky especially with numbers involved and despite I don't like to deal with numbers, I learned to work out things and I enjoyed some of it despite me wanted to puke many times because I have to deal with it every now and then.

To give a brief summary of the reasons why I choose financial goals
1. No Work = No Pay; this is how freelancing works
2. Personal Obligations = Rent and Bills
3. Personal Freedom = Life Goals as described by BDO, Buying a house, your first car and etc.
4. My Lifestyle
5. Marketing for my Business

For quite sometime, I've tried and practice a variety of what I call savings formula, applying the things I learnt from all financial seminar and books I have read. Some were applicable and some are during those time and though there are practices that worked well with me while other's aren't until one day a close friend gave me a book, The Abundance Formula by BO Sanchez, this book upon reading it worked well with me and which I am currently practicing as well.

To simplify, the abundance formula is a 100-10-20-70; in percentage (%); the 100% active income is divided into 3 parts; the 10% Tithe, 20% Savings and 70% Personal Finance. In my case, I started working on the 20% Savings.
  •  20% Savings - Personal Freedom falls under this category; yes, yes and yes. Having savings can be impossible especially for the young ones who is just starting out in their career path and like most young professional who are in this position, having a savings account can be such a tough call to make. In fact on the first few years when I was trying to make a savings, I always cheated on myself that I end up "NO" Savings for my life goal and when I made a firm decision to follow the formula It was really hard as I am tempted to look to achieve a small goal and 20% was like "uh-oh!" and "I'll save later" and a made a lot of compromising decision just to satisfy my goals. What I did, was before I had my 20% Savings, I worked out on my mindset by starting small. I had a personal bank account and enrolled my account to the investment service of the bank wherein I started having 1,000.00 php deducted every month and every time I see that deduction, I reminded myself of the Life Goals until such time 20% was never an issue to me at all.
TIP: Enroll in an Auto-Debit Agreement with your bank or Investment provider in which helped myself change my mindset and it was effective it took months before i stopped thinking about the money auto-debited and that when I increased by savings by 20% it become an instant gratification knowing that 20% is for for my Life Goal and since I was able to change my mindset in having a savings, tithing was become my next goal.
  • 10% Tithe - 10% of your income goes to tithing according to Deuteronomy 14:22-26 and other bible verses too, this is a very hard thing to work on especially when you are used to have everything you have for yourself and this year, I'm glad to say that I was able to consistently contribute on my tithes despite me, myself and I wanted not to do this action and good thing that despite my mind would argue with this topic at most time or me tempted to use this; its intact and when I felt that I need to contribute I felt good to share it.
TIP: Have a Passbook Savings account that is away from your location , so you wont be tempted to get your money from the back and an ATM should not be an option at this point, let your money grow in the bank and when its the right time to share your blessings, share only base on the exceeding amount of your maintaining balance.
  • 70% Personal Finance- My Personal Obligation falls under this category, my lifestyle and marketing for my business. This is where everything becomes a jungle for me as I need to find more ways to increase my income while working on this budget allocated and be more efficient and aggressive to serve my clients. I won't talk to much about personal finance because each individual has its own personal monthly obligation such as house rent, electric bills and even phone bills. It is up to you on how you will manage this.
TIP: Know your fixed monthly expenses which is your personal monthly obligation and also the realistic lifestyle that you have and take an assessment which one are you willing to change and what needs to be eliminated.

Despite the topic of Money is a sensitive issue, many people still don't know the importance of handling their money whether they are professionals or not. In my case, despite knowing its importance it takes a whole level to achieve this formula by starting of changing my mindset. I enjoyed my hard earned money without savings as a saying goes "mayaman ngayon, pulubi bukas"; that compliments well with those people who's mindset or lifestyle of a one-day millionaire and when I realize the importance of handling my money because I was aiming for a bigger goal, implementing it becomes easy and i have to do a lot of self-convincing towards myself on why I did that particular action over and over, and like what I said until it never become an issue to me.

You want something? Then make it work.

Let's talk more about savings and why you should know where you wanted to invest on our next topic.

5 Reason why we need a Financial Goal

Friday, November 09, 2018
December is the month of gift giving, the month where we spend most of our money to share our blessings and to show our love to family and friends. A time where our Christmas Resolution and New Year's resolution become a long haul of listing and thinking, until we get to see that list again or not all on the next Christmas season.

The point is most of it is 10% become real, 10% was started or about to accomplish and then here's another 50% you're going to this that again for the following year and what's left is the 30% where you plan to change it for some reason just don't think its gonna happen.

We'll let's have it simplified. In my personal perspective I somehow overspend my own savings from my personal obligations up to my impromptu purchases. I have my own guilty pleasure and seasonal mood swings to do things maybe because I'm a creative person or simply because I'm just that or maybe, I don't have a self control over my spending. My answer is all of the above.

Why? Simply because I was living at the moment is some point in my life that I wanted to feel free, free to do certain things that I just wanted to do with my own time and earnings and then when its "gone" the after effect becomes more clear and clearer to the point you plan things out for you not to lose at all.

2018, I gave myself a theme "HUSTLE MORE" this is because in 2017, my year was "HUSTLE", base on the learnings I got from Arriane Serafico's Braver Goals that I had in 2017 and unfortunately I wasn't able to complete it that's fine and I plan to work back on it. Fast forward, Some of my friends were talking about law of attraction and law of gratitude that made me wanted to write about this topic.

2018's theme is HUSTLE MORE to breakdown one of the particular category was FINANCIAL GOAL as one of the Top 3 Important Goals I want to achieve this year on the following reasons:
  1. I'm a freelancer; My earnings will depend on how I work and how things would turn out to be.
  2. Personal Obligations. I have bills to pay that's called Adulting and being responsible to contribute or provide things at home.
  3. Personal Freedom; as young as I was I wanted freedom in general and for me to achieve personal freedom I have to work out on my Financial Freedom despite I think I was a bit late to start it because I felt and realize I wasn't seeing results of my any of my hard work despite all the books, e-books, seminars and YouTube videos I have read and listened to. A little action was made on my part and it was both consistent and inconsistent on different areas.
  4.   The Dora inside of me. "Dora, the explorer" is a children's show and despite me not liking it there are time's I was able to watch it and I love to explore new food and places and anything that interest me. In short, I want to travel as much as I can
  5. and last but not the least, Business funds for my Interior Design Services for me to operate in a larger scale.
and these 5 will have to continue until the following years to come because i need to be consistent on the END GOAL if I wanted to achieve them, the key is to achieve this goal is to be able to provide a better service and understanding of one's self and to take a few steps backwards what matters to you because no matter how many times I write, share and be heard; it means nothing without consistent action on my own part.

On my next post, I'll share on the ways on How to Achieve your Financial Goal as a creative person.

What am I passionate about?

Monday, November 05, 2018

By the definition of passionate is someone who has a strong desire or strong feelings towards a belief that can lead to a positive effect on our lives or may go to the other way. Looking at the brighter side of everything, passion is a great emotion driven by personal goals and current situation and perhaps, a past occurrences in our eventful life.

I certainly have  lot of passion in life I've got 3 passion that I am focusing and will be focusing on the following year or more on a general word.

Self-improvement: Creativity. Regardless on what field I am, Creativity is something I had since young I love colors and making things out of nothing that lead me of becoming a licensed interior designer. Creativity seeks something to be explored thru personal encounters and stories behind which I enjoy the most. I see things that aren't there yet that people had visualized and when that design is implemented it takes a lot of things to be done in order to have the desired result another thing is to be able to express myself in different ways.

Business and Finance. Discussing about money matters and be knowledgeable on sensitive things such as money can never be a boring topic for me, as long as we don't make it over the top that I wouldn't understand but would try to understand. Business is not for everyone, when everyone can have the opportunity to have a business as it business is an evolving process of ones self and its industry and be able to carry out the best practices that we can share on our next generation or help people who are close to us to be aware of it.

Uplifting Others. One of the things I have instill in mind is that my mom would encourage me to donate the things that I no longer use or things I have lacked interest after using it to give an opportunity to people who may be very happy to receive it. Many past events either in school or a calamity that happened in the country has proven me that up to this day we do practice this and thus in our own little way we have uplifted the lives of other people. As you know a percentage of my professional fee's goes to my tithing and only used to help people.

These three are the things I have been practicing and as I grow older the better I understand the value of it and also be able to be of someones help as i pursue other passion in life.

    Declining a "Hotel" Project

    Wednesday, October 31, 2018
Photo by Ahmad Al-Shabory from Pexels
Nope. Not the photo above. A colleague before informed me about a residential project turned hotel since their house is nearby a development that is good for tourism. So I contacted this Engineer who is the contractor of this "Hotel" Project.

We had exchange of emails and details and ideas on how the hotel would look like and how they wanted it to be. Like any of my potential client and other clients I gave my best price for my professional fee. Sadly, they find my price too high for their budget and directly asked how much they are willing to pay for a designer.

To my surprise they are willing to pay 5,000 php for a 4 storey project with more than 1,500 sqm for the reason that its JUST Design and suggested to get a particular design from this Hotel in which they did the construction. I immediately declined this project and informed in a polite and firm indication that they do not understand the value of an Interior Designers.

In my point of view, Licensed Interior Designers are not just an icing over a cupcake, its the entire process to understand the flow, the brand of the client and feel they wanted to evoke. It's design and technical knowledge molded into an art master piece. A design for a client may look like a Pinterest made into a reality but the fact is that we studied how to place everything before it was even proposed to a client, In other words, design is not a copy and paste thing that you see in pinterest and have it implemented; its the lifestyle you personally wanted to evoke towards the end user (describes the user of the place; your target market) of the space. And before you say you cant afford or the designer price is too high, please do understand what kind of results a Licensed Interior Designer could bring in to the table; as each designer has the ability to implement any project.

    TO KNOW MORE ABOUT US:

    Batch 2014

    Monday, October 29, 2018
"I'm graduating!" I exclaimed!  After my thesis defense I found out I passed and I knew from there I'm graduating and I did. After spending hours in preparation of my thesis defense and all the hard work I put through myself, my mom, my friends and people who made it possible. I truly made it.

2014 is a memorable year for me. I got my diploma that year which is another milestone that I have achieve and my mom. Of course, My mom was the happiest human being when I graduated after years being in school and ups and downs that happened at the end of the day it was all worth it.

The photos above were after my graduation in 2014 as we celebrate our success. This was my journey towards my dream of becoming an interior designer by passing the first challenge to graduate in the University of San Carlos Bachelors in Science in Interior Design.

At this point, I was called Interior Decorator after graduating because I was not licensed. According o Article V. Section 34: Prohibition in the Practice of Interior Design in summary I can't be called Interior Designer, Interior Stylist or Interior Designer Consultant if I haven't passed the licensure exam and for me to be truly called Interior Designer, I took another meaningful journey by taking the board exam the following year and another fruitful year also for me and my family.

    Top 5 Social Media Platform

    Wednesday, October 24, 2018

Gone are the days that I would make an effort to write a lengthy letter and have it drop to the post office and have my letter send to my friends and family; those traditional, yester-years are something that we still all treasure and find it more compelling in terms of effort and making us feel more connected. However, with the ever-changing ways communication I could deny that these technology is where my life and business runs with my entire day and here are my Top 5 Social Media Platform that I frequently use.

    1. Instagram. Since I joined Instagram, I really got hooked on to this but my having my feed curated or wanting to be like an Instagram influencer but on how people and users makes an effort to showcase a beautifully curated photos and makes it so enticing not just for a show but also telling me, why I should make an effort in putting a content that is motivational and meaningful not just for myself and but also for those who follows and who the whole community of instagrammers.

    2. Facebook Messenger. Facebook messenger become the alternative for a mobile phone in terms of communicating with friends. It helps me to connect with friends and also clients since this become an office platform were documents and quick images are sent that mobile phone service provider cant. Aside from its quick and easy, its more or less looks like a free platform despite all the huge data im sending and sharing.

    3. Pinterest. My lifesaver, there are times that I cant fully explain what I meant that I use its imagegs or photos faster communication towards my idea. Pinterest is where I also get my ideas and at most the answers to my quick or passive questions and since I'm a visual person, i get to understand things better that what I would read for a quick learning.

    4. YouTube. The Online TV Box that I could say, this is where I would listen and watch any videos from education to reality life of a video blog and entertainment; It makes everything quicker and understand better the things that despite reading an entire book, I got to understand the summary version plus have a number of references of the same topic and whenever I wanted to entertain I just type in the music category and viola! its there, listening to the music is another click away on the search tab.

    5. Facebook. Facebook has become my least favorite because I find it to commercialized and people seems to post whatever they want and post things that doesn't' feel right; That's their thing though and still, I kept this app to find out the "what's going on with your life, my friend?" my just checking their profile rather than browse more than thirty (30)  mins and check whats going on. Since I was once addicted to this app and I don't feel good about it spending unconsciously 5 hours of my time, scrolling and lying down; though is app is reliable since the people whom I'm know has this app than any social media.

    Curious?

    Let's get connected

The 5 reasons I started my company on a Personal Level

    Monday, October 22, 2018
Photo by bruce mars from Pexels

My story with wanting to be in the business started as early as I was an infant, probably because I grew up with parents who are entrepreneurial and must be on the genes (probably!).  I had such a beautiful and exciting flare for it that my parents just let me go by whatever I think would give me a Eureka moment. I had a lot of stories of different business ventures but only one (1) (uno) (prima) Business, I ready took seriously to the next level and that is Premiere Design Interiors.

Why? I had it registered (under E.G.Pimentel Interior Design Services) and this is the most business that I worked so hard and took me years before starting on my own and to tell you, I have been wanting to have a company that I can call mine and I'd like to share the reason I started my company on a Personal Level.

    Time.

It was the right time to start my business, A company I can call mine. Surely Mine and I'll be the one running and do the lead, just like anyone wanting to own their business. I felt I was running out of time and I must do what I have planned a long time ago, right after I had my license.

    Freedom.

I always wanted Freedom and I wanted to do the things I have missed or be somewhere no one would call be or ask or demand me on my time; back then I'm a YES Person for some reason. I got tied to a job that doesn't give me what I want in a more than 8-5 job that I felt lost overtime and stuck in my life especially on the later part.

Exploring new things has been my agenda and If I would continue working, I won't have it. I wanted to prove myself that I can do it and I am meant to for it; No Matter what the challenges would be thrown on me. I see myself similar to a bird whose been in a cage for a long time and once that bird broke its barriers, the bird flew up to the sky and look at the brighter side of life.

    Creative Control.

I wanted control on the things that I have or wanted to do; Order I must say in all aspect if possible. I'm not a perfectionist but I wanted Control things that I can control especially when being creative.

    People.

I am limited to meet people and explore new things; and there are certain people that I want to enjoy ones company and be surrounded with to explore a wonderful . A lot of people told me that I would fly and those words of encouragement were helpful. I see a lot of my friends who took a direction a few would take and I am inspired on the people who took those steps of giving value towards themselves. There was this saying you'll never know what you'll get until you do your part.

Education. I'm a graduate, licensed and I felt that I have to use that on a higher purpose and reason and for me to do that I need to step up my game and take a high risk on taking new challenges in life. It was full of uncertainty back then and all my knowledge  gained from school, work and the people I was on with myself and just perfectly imperfect the way it was.  Especially now that I'm pursuing a post-graduate education, Masters of Architecture - Major in Interior Architecture. I felt things are just on its right and bumpy journey where everyday is a choice to make.

Those are my reason why I started my business and make it legit.

Now, that my business is LEGIT
I am more willing to take higher risk than I did on the last year. Feel free to reach me at

    Ace your Thesis Proposal

    Friday, October 19, 2018

It seems that you have won a 4 digit lottery when you have your design plans to be presented to your client. Immediately hitting your laptop to check these plans and encode all the stuff you need to present to the panelist. You wanted to Ace everything that you don't like to miss a single hit. I got your point, but what exactly do you need to present. Aside from the list of items either you know of or a list of items given to your instructor before the design proposal.

On my part, During the time we were all proposing with the 5 panelist, 5 of our major instructors were there asking us a bunch of things during a closed door meeting per student as we have to defend it also on the W's?

My 3 copies of A3 PAPERS and short bond paper are in placed to be given to them individually and As I stood up in front of them with a copy of my own, they threw me some questions to defend my plan.

    1. Where is this located? Provide a vicinity map.
    2. Is the built, constructed or design phase?
    3. How many square meters in total, does this belong to the 500 sqm requirement. Provide the breakdown of Area
    4. Who is the architect, company?
    5. Do I have a permission? This is the time you show the Approval Sheets(Submit the approval plan signed by the architect that you're allowed to use the plan for thesis)
    6. What is the Client background, give them a little overview about the proposal
    7. Why did you choose this project?
    8. What is the Possible Concept.
These were just a few things being asked in general, On the spot the panelist will give you an insight on the possible concerns per proposal presented including why the student should or should not proceed with it and Lastly, your enthusiast and their assessment on the project if it does well with your ability to present and your design strength. When approved, Oh! My, you won the 5 Digit Lottery.

    What is your story then?

How did Premiere Design Interiors got its name?

    Monday, October 15, 2018

Before Premiere Design Interiors got its name, I have thought and named different names since High School whether i'd like to use it in the future and a few of the them I could recall would be

    • Lireo Interior Design because I was a big fan of Encantadia back when it first aired
    • Design Wave because my college friends loves to go to the beach
    • The Emari Interiors because its first name with the "THE" just to feel like a celebrity
None of those push through and it would be funny if I did but of course, I think that Lireo would be a catchy name to use for a business name; after all Jacinto and Lirio has proved to be a good name for business. Here I am progressively building a brand name using Premiere Design Interiors, It came around between 2014 and 2015 when I was thinking what name I would use for myself and for prospect clients to remember my name, I initially named it Pimentel Premiere Design Interiors, why?
    • Pimentel, stands for my name and it really rings a bell. Most often its where I get my initial conversation with anyone who talks to me.
    • Premiere, stands for the "first show" like a ballerina you are introduced and do the best in which I aim to do the best like it was my first project.
    • Design, stands that I do design and what specifically?
    • Interiors, I do Interior Design as my specific niche

Later then I named it Premiere Design Interiors when I was continuously accepting side hustle in 2017 and up to this day, that I have registered the business under E.G.Pimentel Interior Design Services while Premiere Design Interiors, is my trademark branding name for the business.

Ready to get started on your next

    design project?

Where to find my thesis plan?

    Friday, October 12, 2018
Photo by Startup Stock Photos from Pexels

Internship done. Thesis Plan, Blurrrreeeedddd. Not for me, I have prepared ahead of time to whom where I should be getting my thesis during the time I was in my internship program. I have asked the following people and company already before that and thankfully I had 5 design plans lined up for approval just in case some will not be accepted, So at least I had a back up.

If you are one of those students who merely doesn't know where to find your thesis plans. Here's some ideas where I got my thesis plans.

    1. Architectural Firm
    2. Private Practicing Architect
    3. Real Estate Developer
    4. Interior Design Firm, I didn't but some of my classmates did.

Who else would you get the plan right? They are the technical and design person who the client would go to before Interior Designers can work.

    1. Just like applying for an Internship
    2. Ask for an appointment and explain why you need that
    3. Back up your appointment with a letter of consent from the school that you need a plan for thesis
    4. Letter of Request on your side
    5. Business Card with your Name on it and number to remind them of your request
    6. A Contract between you and the architect assuring them that you wont share their design plan (if required) and what do they expect in return, Some in exchange of the 3D Design and Plan in Soft and Hardcopy
    7. Purchase a NEW USB if they will give you the soft copy, to give them a relief that your nor bringing any viruses to their personal computers or laptops.
    8. Follow up them and Don't wait for them to contact you. You aren't their priority in general because they are busy and their priority is their client
    9. Be thankful a small token of appreciation for them will make you both happy.

There you have it. It's simple to take some responsibility over the course of time rather than cramming. I had my fair share of cramming and delaying. In other words procrastinating and this will put you in a lot of stress that you don't want to handle. Being in your last year of college will have a lot of pressure. Mind you, this is crucial for 1 mistake or failed subject will not lead to your graduation.

    My Internship delimma

I have passed my third year majors and Thank God I did it. It was time for me to search and acquire new knowledge through Internship during the two months summer break. I was so excited that I had all my resumes and portfolio printed, ready to be submitted.

I had spent searching over the net when it doesn't give me results back then the things that I needed. I saw no interior design firms , and when I did its not in Cebu since I relied to much on the net. Since I had a handful list of to whom to go for that two specific days that I'm going to visit to submit my resume and Finally, the last stop, After two days of commuting, walking and being in the city to find a job, I got accepted immediately and headed of the following week to start my Internship.

In my mindset at that time, I want to start my internship wherever field I will be only here in Cebu. I have no specific idea which and where I want to go. All I was thinking of that it should be related to my course and I want to have a good grade. I didn't make a 10 sources to know about a company, I merely looked at the Company Name, the industry, Address and Telephone number to find out about them and submit. WRONG MOVE, as I have a different plan at that time but GLAD IT HAPPENED because over the two month period, I was able to gain additional knowledge, knowing people and be able to communicate and it's not exactly how I imagine to be and yet, I had a great time.

For those planning to have an Internship, Do not limit yourself by having your internship somewhere around the globe or outside your location as the learning counts more than where you were planted.
    1. Research about the industry you want to be part of, at this point you should know
      • Real Estate
      • Construction
      • Interior Design Firms
      • Retail Stores
      • Furniture Companies
      • Specialty Companies related to Interior
      • Others that you think will help you in your career
    2. Prepare your Resume, Portfolio and School Requirments
      • Have a hard copy and soft copy ready on hand
    3. Ask for an Appointment or Interview
      • Make it personal communication, through Phone Calls and E-mails
      • Avoid text unless you made a few calls before Texting
      • Visit your prospect
      • Avoid social media communication as possible

Before and After Internship there are thing to consider, as this is a small detail to help you figure out what you wanted to become in the near future when you plan to work. The internship is just one way knowing your strength and how you visualize yourself. So think of it was a process on becoming an Interior Designer not just by title but also with knowledge.

Back to the Future: 1 year journey of Full-time Freelancing

I was reading a blog when  I read "What were you doing a year ago today? How has your business changed?" that I decided to answer question.

A year ago, October 1, 2018, I was officially unemployed; I knew it was time. I left a "secured" job to do a freelancing interior design works to finally be able to get this off my chest on wondering what could it be. I have thought about it for a long time and when I finally did; I had my hesitations asking some inner thoughts. Can I do this? Will I be able to survive? How am I going to work this out? Should I apply for another company? Stuff like this put myself in questioning my ability to look beyond what I have.

A year ago, I invested most in marketing my business, Premiere Design Interiors. I relied most of my clients through social media, business listing and website and most of my time learning on doing business plan, marketing and implementations; I tested all those strategies that fits within my timeline and budget most often exceeding my budget in trying different things that works best for me. It was challenging to make things up specially when projects becomes overwhelming either multiple projects coming in, personal stuff going on to my life that I even hardly could have time to manage it properly. I was mostly in "WORK WORK WORK", which isn't good for my health and little my little I'm managing it to make it balance and still in a work in progress.

In one year time, what I was basically building my portfolio and connecting with people and educating myself attending the available and access any resources I have. Network with people and engage myself in various activities relating to interior design as I develop myself through the wonderful experience as I have personally grew and my business grew as well, I have decided to register and operate my business 1 month before my a year anniversary in freelancing. So, How my business changed, it went from freelancing gig to an operational interior design service provider for owners who seek an Interior Designer to create a lifestyle space for their home and business needs.

Recalling on how I felt being jobless ("secured job"); It was the best decision I made; I saw different wonders in life, people and experience that made me grew and how I look forward to be better and how I would like to pursue my job as a Creative Entrepreneur in Interior Design.

Curious on what I could offer?

Have you experienced that you were walking at the hallway with your friends enjoying every crack of jokes when suddenly you noticed that the teacher (professor, instructor) who flanked you is going in your direction?

You suddenly tell your friends to hide you but it was too late because you knew that he saw you already. Your friends would tell you to act normal and you can feel yourself in a turtle walk (walking slowly) and your friends followed here after making your time and motion like it was 10mins to move your feet to the next step.

I saw my teacher who flanked me, I want to run away and hide but our paths will be crossing again. I wanted to smack his face, I wanted to chop him and so on and so forth and ta-dah! That person is getting closer and closer and I said (together with my friends)

“Hi! Sir, Good morning!” with a big smile and boiling blood inside me, though he just passed by, I can’t help but be mad at him for flanking me. I had so many reasons why I should pass and one reason to fail base on my point of view. There were many reasons why I hated him at that particular time in my college years and I would join the club of picking and cracking jokes behind him.

I know it sounds awful on my part for being a bad student or a person in some ways and looking back, I would never change those things for those things happened and I have overcome with it as time healed and be able to challenge myself to be better in the craft that I look forward of becoming a profession one day. Those times moulded me of what I am becoming and progressing about myself.

When we (my friends) went back the following year to re-take the same subject that we flanked, in one of our plates the teacher made a joke about my design plate that it was not me who was making the drafting and design and by letting my friend, J do the work that I had submitted. Since, the 3 of us (J,E, and A) in his subject that was seated next to each other, He makes a tease and joke on us.

I haven't forgotten that he was the was the same teacher who flanked me, I put my best foot forward at that time and applied some of J’s techniques, (who would make some time to tutor me during breaks) on doing drafting design because I suck in drafting and J, was one of the best students when it comes to drafting.

I took the teachers joke as a compliment and that time it I know that I have to do better than the next and we were friends with him. I’m not a perfect student nor an example of a bad one but those trials that came and become triumphant because we embrace the fact that we can improve and our teachers see what’s best for us, We may hate them but we could also love them. Despite that, he has retired already in teaching but whenever we meet, we had a good exchange of our smiles and reminiscence beautiful stories about how I was in school back in his time.

Students now a days are blessed to have the technologies that they can use and expand their creativity. What I see in them is how have to fight a battle within themselves without relying too much on technology. It still pays off to be patient, persistent and humble themselves for there is so much to learn when they have to begin in world being a working class or an employer.

What to do next? I’m so screwed

You flanked your design major? Welcome to the Club, You are officially part of the normal students who come and stayed a little longer than the rest. Let’s see who’s joining the club next semester. As I have mentioned in my previous post, what matters is how you get back after a failure. It’s like wanting an ice cream for a particular period and you never had one.

I’m sure many of you would have wondered, what am I supposed to do next? A question we encountered every time when we don’t know exactly what to do. Why? Because amongst ourselves we know deep inside we were still hurting on the pain we caused ourselves. We were in a state of denial wherein we felt the world has ended for us and seeing those people we love with disappointment.

I’ve experienced that and believe me, you’ll pass that stage like it never happened because you may not know what you want to do next but you know what you have to do when you will be in that same spot as you were by the time you’ll enroll yourself in that same subject.  Of course, you were now a little bum because you have a lot to chill out and go to Rosedale or find a Miniski to play your favorite online game or be at the nearest liquor shop and be dramatic somehow with your friends who share the same sentiment as you.

On a serious note, this is the time you can take advance classes that fit your schedule and still be a full-time student. Just make sure that your priority is still your major subjects and there is a slot that you can fit your minor subjects, the better because in the following years during your fourth year you can prepare for your thesis of at least 500sqm and not feel bothered on your next progress. So you will never have to feel bad about yourself not taking advance classes.

    Flanking your Design Major

How would you feel if you flanked your design course? Terrible, right? I felt that way too when I had my first major flank and it’s even a design class. An off-semester course, it means I have to take it on the next school year and another year will be added during my stay in college and I’m f*ck with my mom. Imagine how scared, I was shaking and my head looking down at the floor and no eye contact and shut my room and cry in silence.

A few days later, I told my mom about it as I cried and there she was evolving to a Momzilla, a slang term for mothers who transformed like a Godzilla when mad, and my semester break wasn’t good either as we weren’t in speaking terms during that time though she had figured it out already before I had the courage to say it.

I was back in school together and spent most of my time with my friends who flanked. We had a lot of time to chill and do other to make ourselves productive by enrolling advance subjects and engaging to healthy activities and other stuff that interest us since we are irregular students and we gained new friends, who welcomed us to the group of irregular students (senior to us) also who flanked their major and it was encouraging us just like the rest,” Its normal to flank in our design major, you’re in the creative field and we will be doing just fine.” Whoever said this to us it was comforting and looking back for what had happened. We felt cool because we were part of the normal creative people who flanked also and some of our friends followed our footsteps in the flanking their majors. What are friends are for right?

Flanking a design major is a big deal and it only becomes a big deal when you take this too hard on yourself that you are not allowing yourself to see a good judgment on why it happened to you. Sometimes, it happens because there is a lesson to be learned and by the time you graduate you’ll laugh about it and thankful for what had happened. The important thing is to be able to get up and never give up on becoming an Interior Designer.

I want to be an Interior Designer!!!

"I wanted to be an Interior Designer!". Most people told me this because I enjoy re-arranging their house. No offense to all the people spoke to me telling me they wanted to be an Interior Designer whenever they hear me say,” Hi! I’m Emari Pimentel, Interior Designer.” From time to time I make my introductions to my profession because its one way for me to connect with potential clients, referrals or even suppliers.

For the younger generation, young at heart or creative who plans to pursue a degree in Interior Design. Access your God’s given gift because not all of us can be an Interior Designer or even in a specific course of that you felt right for you. During my senior year, We (graduating students) took a lot of test on the possibilities on which field of courses we will be most likely be enrolled and even a possibility of which schools we will be accepted at. Of course, Creative, Business and Medicine were the top three results of my tests.

I got my results and checked on the possible courses that I would be into:
    ·         Advertising Arts
    ·         Theater Arts
    ·         Production
    ·         Industrial
    ·         Interior Design
    ·         Multi-Media Arts
    ·         Architecture

Are just a few courses that I was looking into under Creative, while Business Administration Major in Marketing was the only course I was interested in Business and Psychology for Medicine. I have to read, read and assess myself asking my peers, teachers and my mom on the journey. It was a no-brainer that I would be choosing Marketing, Interior Design, Architecture and Multi-Media Arts. My heart was into Marketing though I am fascinated with Both Architecture and Interior Design.

My mom and I would argue about taking Marketing because I would insist on it despite seeing myself being an Interior Designer as well. I was being a bum for a few weeks because the entrance exams were getting closer and closer, terrified that I may not be accepted on those top schools.

A night before my entrance exam for a particular university, I watched a Korean drama, Princess Lulu, wherein that particular episode Lulu, the protagonist of the series, drew a kitchen and made use of Manicure to color in her perspective. I figured out that I wanted to be an Interior Designer while being in the field of Business as I would market myself in the future. I was still undecided and said to myself, “Come what may.”
Later that night, Mom arrived home and gave me a pep talk after dinner. She made herself clear on why she didn’t see me becoming a Marketing Person and why she thinks I’m better off on taking the Interior Design or Architecture course and that made me fully realize why I should take Interior Design Course.

The first step to becoming an Interior Designer, know your strengths and weaknesses because it enables you to know yourself and be able to give you a better judgment on what you may truly become in the professional world and be able to stand on your decision on as you take another milestone in life. Ask people close to you without being pressured by the society’s definition of success.

The Dream of Becoming an Interior Designer

The month of August has become Cebu’s first month on the school opening under the K-12 Curriculum. Luckily, I enjoyed the yesteryears of being a busy bee in June as I would rush towards the University’s First Day of School of becoming an Interior Designer.

The month of June disheartens me from time to time as I would read waking up early to get on my feet and be in school, Since I live in the South of Cebu, Talisay City back then; An Hour and a half ride going to school at most in two for several years that I would wake up at 5:00am and leave at 6:00am before traffic would have me stuck. Since there is only one school in Cebu offers Interior Design Course, my Alma mater, the University of San Carlos in Talamban, Cebu.

When I entered college, I knew what I want and what I like; the course I had laid my eyes on despite that Interior Design was my second choice. However, my mom made me realize that I would be better with this course base on my interest and so many reasons why I should be in. She made me fly my own wings, made me decide on the journey I would take on. At that time, when most of my friends were taking Nursing due to the demand of the course, the people who are willing to help them and/or the people who guarantee a secure job for them abroad, that was never my thing. I didn’t allow peoples opinion to direct my life and be swayed by their good intentions because I have already laid my eyes on what I wanted to become. All I need was their support to take that journey and I’m glad they did.

To be in a design course, I know that I am one of those people gifted with a creative talent and to have endurance like an Engineer and a brain similar to an architect in such way because most people see that to be in this course are all make-up and fashion like they saw on magazines and TV. They are unable to see what it is like behind the scenes on every plate (design projects during university days) or every design project (professionally speaking) that we do. It takes a lot of hours taking off our sleep and energy just to deliver what is expected more from us.  We have our own story to tell about our sacrifices in order to achieve of what we wanted to become when we were starting our journey as a student and that the sacrifices we (family, friends and us, the student) did was reaching our dreams of becoming an Interior Designer.

How did I come up with my services?

After a long holiday season for the month of November, I took sometime off after being overwhelmed with the projects I am undertaking. T...
